Certificate of Service Presentation: Keisher Harris and Sr. Program DirectorStarted in 1999, the Greater Newark & Jersey City LISC AmeriCorps Program has been a stable program in enabling LISC to strategically address human capital issues for LISC supported community development corporations (CDCs).    Through an application process for both committed community minded individuals and CDCs, individuals are placed to work at CDCs to manage projects, assist on programs, and create healthier communities where we work.   At the close of a service year, AmeriCorps members are awarded with a certificate from the Corporation on National Service to commemorate their dedication to serving America.  Pictured here on the right are 2004-2005 AmeriCorps members with LISC AmeriCorps' Senior Program Director Pearl Jones.

The LISC AmeriCorps Program's goals are threefold: Certificate of Service: Angela Cook and Sr. Program Director Pearl Jones

  1. To foster a connection between CDCs and individuals committed to creating healthier communities while providing a living allowance and educational stipend,
  2. To enhance a CDCs capacity to undertake community revitalization projects in a timely manner, and
  3. To expose individuals to the community development field in an effort to establish an experienced cadre of professionals willing to work in the industry.

LISC AmeriCorps members' duties vary depending on the needs of the CDC. Members responsibilities may include the following;
 - recruit volunteers,Certificate of Service Presentation: Kele Martin and Sr. Program Director
 - conduct workshops,
 - conduct research on land use,
 - increase awareness of community resources,
 - manage housing development process,
 - mobilize residents to take action
 - organize special events/ celebrations

In addition, each member has to participate in direct community service projects and organize at least one during their term of service, attend 10 monthly meetings and organize at least one, participate in 6 local trainings, submit monthly written reports and bi-monthly timesheets, travel to attend a week long National Orientation in October.  At the conclusion of a year's service, the expectation is that members are ready and able to enter the community development profession.  The program runs from September 1 to August 31st.
