Public Policy

Public policy in favor of community development initiatives could hasten CDCs efforts to acquire abandoned land, condemnation of deteriorating structures and facilitate whole neighborhood revitalization efforts in the areas we work.  Currently, the Greater Newark & Jersey City area is littered with vacant and abandoned properties, which could be developed into housing, commercial space, or other community assets. However, without appropriate public policy, the transfer of this land to CDCs or others who can put it to good use is hindered by a maze of legal, procedural, and economic barriers. As a champion for local community development efforts, the Greater Newark & Jersey City LISC office works to strategically address community development obstacles.

To that end, the Greater Newark & Jersey City LISC program has joined forces with New Jersey CDCs, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey, Fannie Mae and a number of other community development advocates and formed the Homes for New Jersey coalition.  The coalition's mission is to double the amount of affordable housing produced, preserved and rehabilitated in New Jersey.  Currently the State produces an estimated 5,000 affordable housing units a year.  The Homes for New Jersey is advocating for that number to increase over the next four years producing a 10,000 units per year or 40,000 in four years.
