Public Policy
Public policy in favor of community development initiatives could hasten CDCs efforts to acquire abandoned land, condemnation of deteriorating structures and facilitate whole neighborhood revitalization efforts in the areas we work. Currently, the Greater Newark & Jersey City area is littered with vacant and abandoned properties,
which could be developed into housing, commercial space, or other community
assets. However, without appropriate public policy, the transfer of this
land to CDCs or others who can put it to good use is hindered by a maze of
legal, procedural, and economic barriers. As a champion for local community development efforts, the Greater Newark & Jersey City LISC office works to strategically address community development obstacles.
