“Great Indy Neighborhoods” to hold workshops for neighborhoods interested in participating in community development program

LISC, City of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center lead comprehensive community development effort that integrates civic, social, physical and economic development in Indianapolis neighborhoods.

Indianapolis – The Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiatives (GINI), a citywide collaboration created to promote a holistic approach to healthy community building, will hold workshops for applicants and solicit letters of intent from Indianapolis communities interested in participating in a comprehensive community development program.

Qualifying applicants must be nonprofit, neighborhood-based organizations that have demonstrated the interest and capacity to take a leadership role in the revitalization of a specific neighborhood and have a history of collaborative partnerships with other neighborhood groups and organizations. Residents, groups and organizations from the same neighborhood are strongly encouraged to work together to create a unified submission.

Neighborhoods with interest in applying should have representation at one of the workshops:

When:     February 25th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
               OR
               March 1st at 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Where:    Julia Carson Center 300 E. Fall Creek Parkway N. Drive.

The application deadline for interested participants is April 3, 2006 and should be sent, in duplicate, to LISC, 333 N. Pennsylvania Street, Suite 600, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204.

GINI was borne from the continued community-wide dialogue that occurred after the one-day community development summit held in the fall of 2004. The initiative has evolved into a multi-dimensional program that includes a demonstration project designed to showcase the benefits of comprehensive community development and strengthen and improve local neighborhoods.

Comprehensive community development focuses on all aspects of neighborhood life and encourages multifaceted, resident-led improvement efforts.

Grants to administer the program will be available for up to three years, pending adherence to established criteria. A detailed description of the program can be found at www.greatindyneighborhoods.org under Program Recommendations of the Community Development Strategy Group.
