Citywide Neighborhood Development Initiative Releases “Resource Guide”
Guide connects people with business, education, safety, housing and related services to help improve their neighborhood, quality of life
Indianapolis, IN – October 16, 2006 – Indianapolis residents and organizations searching for the resources and partners they need for comprehensive community development need look no further than a resource guide released today by the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiatives (GINI).
The 24-page booklet is organized by asset categories, Civic, Social, Physical and Economic. Each category includes “question and answer” sections designed to help neighbors locate resources for community and neighborhood development.
“This guide is a great tool for residents who want to improve their neighborhoods but don’t know where to start,” said Mayor Bart Peterson. “This is what Great Indy Neighborhoods is all about – providing residents and neighborhoods with a road map for reinvigorating, revitalizing and reinvesting in their community.”
The printed version of the free booklet can be found at Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center at 1802 N. Illinois Street, the City of Indianapolis through the Division of Neighborhood Services, or as an electronic “PDF” version available at: www.greatindyneighborhoods.org. The guide was made possible through the Indianapolis Foundation, a Central Indiana Community Foundation affiliate.
About GINI: Established in 2004, the Great Indy Neighborhoods Initiatives is a partnership between the City of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center (INRC) and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). It was created with the guidance of more than 400 neighborhood leaders, business owners, residents and faith-based organizations to support Indianapolis neighborhoods by encouraging neighbors to work together across traditional boundaries. In August, 2006, Mayor Bart Peterson and a coalition of neighborhood and community leaders announced $2.4 million in private investment to support efforts to improve the quality of life in six targeted neighborhoods.
Representing more than 160,000 residents, the targeted neighborhoods include the Near East Side, Near Southside, Binford Road neighborhoods, Near West Side, Near Southwest Side and Crooked Creek.
