Proudest Achievement

2007 saw the successful first year of the Kaw Valley and Northland Habitat merger to form Heartland Habitat for Humanity. We are excited about the benefits the merger will offer our partner families, volunteers and donors.

Heartland Habitat was successful in getting 29 families into simple, decent affordable housing in 2007.  We constructed 11 new, single family homes, and finished many more.

Heartland Habitat also opened its ReStore in 2007.  The Heartland Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a retail outlet where quality new and used surplus building materials are priced at 20-80% off retail and resold to the public.  All items sold by ReStore are donated building materials and fixtures from individuals, building supply stores, business closeouts, contractors and demolition crews.  Other donations such as quality used and display furniture and appliances in 100% working order are also sold.  ReStore is also environmentally-friendly by re-channeling good and functional materials into use.  When items are donated, hauling and trash disposal costs are eliminated, building materials and other home improvement products are recycled back into the community, and more than 2,000 tons of materials are diverted from Kansas City area landfills yearly.  The net income is returned to Heartland Habitat to help fund the construction of Habitat houses within the greater Kansas City community.

Priorities for 2008-2009 We will continue to focus on implementing the merged organization while continuing a stable build schedule and enhancing our internal capacity for growth. We will strengthen our homeowner education, support and community development aspects of our program. We are also creating partnerships that will enhance mixed-income neighborhoods.  Our build plan for 2008 includes the construction of 15 new, single family residences as well as rehabbing several additional properties, positively impacting over 20 families.
Programs, Products, Services Heartland Habitat for Humanity builds homes in partnership with low-income families. Homes are sold at cost and with no interest charged on the 20-year mortgage. Partner families attend 40 hours of Homeowner Education Classes and work 350 hours of “sweat equity” on their home and other Habitat homes. Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcomed to join the force of more than 4,000 who help us each year.
