Mission / Vision Statement

Westside Housing Organization (WHO) builds options for sustainable communities through strong partnerships.

Westside Housing Organization promotes community livability and residential empowerment through the provision of low, moderate and market value housing. Entrusted with providing these services to the community, we pledge to:

  • Develop safe, decent, desirable housing alternatives;
  • Create opportunities for home ownership;
  • Solicit active neighborhood involvement in every project we undertake;
  • Maintain the highest standards of workmanship in the design and construction of development projects;
  • Build partnerships with other neighborhood boards, organizations and agencies; and
  • Advocate for public and private improvements that address community priorities.
Neighborhoods Served WHO services are available in three areas: 13th Street to 47th Street, State Line to Broadway; 31st Street to North Armour Boulevard, Main to Charlotte; and Gladstone Boulevard to Independence Avenue, Chestnut to Jackson.
Proudest Achievement WHO is the only CDC in Kansas City, Missouri that includes a significant focus on serving the Latino community and in 1998, WHO replaced the worst public housing project in Kansas City, Missouri with 10 single family homes and 120 mixed-income apartments and town-homes.
Priorities for 2006-2007
  • Complete the renovation of 4328 Walnut, a beautiful 1924 building that will provide six for-sale condominium units in the Southmoreland Neighborhood.
  • Complete four new-construction, affordable in-fill homes on the Westside.
  • Re-syndicate three Low Income Housing Tax Credit rental developments into one entity, creating economies of scale and capital improvements and upgrades that will preserve 75 units of affordable housing for decades to come.
  • Organize 19 Model Blocks on the Westside that will ultimately create several Model Block Clusters focused on resident engagement and collective action to address goals and issues specific to those specific geographic areas.
  • Provide home improvement funding, construction oversight and education to at least 40 qualified families.
