Camino Nuevo Charter Academy
In 1999, LISC partnered with Excellent Education (EXED) in working
closely with Pueblo Nuevo Development (PND) to assist with the development of the
Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, a new K-5 school for 265 children in the MacArthur
Park-Westlake area. The LISC loan
financed a portion of the cost of renovating a vacant two-story mini-mall into a
beautiful new school facility. The
new facility has substantially enhanced the neighborhood where it is located and
provides a much needed education resource for the children of very low-income
families. The Camino Nuevo
Charter Academy project was conceived, approved, funded, constructed and opened
in about 18 months time.

In the three years since, PND has expanded their charter school to include a middle school campus bringing the total number of seats to over 500.
During 2003 a school based health clinic was added to help meet the needs of the children and families botha thte school and within the community. The clinic is being operated by California Hospital Medical Center and they project 7,000 patient visits annually.
